meet the afro-beats
This staging of the award-winning Broadway musical details the life and times of Fela Kuti, the Nigerian activist, politician, composer and the godfather of Afrobeat. Like many biographical works about activist rebels, this performance deals with the intricacies of a violent, corrupt police state, the role of celebrity as a political lightning rod, and the oppression of speech through government censorship. Unlike many biographical works about activist rebels, this performance has a baller soundtrack. Yeah, turning back years of oppressive cultural hegemony sounds great. Like, literally.
